Research History and Research Interests

Michael E. Hyland obtained a BSc at Bristol University in 1971 and a PhD at the University of Wales in 1977. He is a chartered health psychologist, with a practising certificate

His early career was as a theoretical psychologist, working on the nature of theoretical entities particularly in relation to the mind-body problem. With Irving Kirsch he developed the idea of methodological complementarity – that different types of psychological explanation should be treated as complementary

From the late 1980s he worked as a health psychologist focusing on asthma quality of life, asthma management, and quality of life in many other diseases. He is the author of five quality of life scales, including the Living with Asthma Questionnaire, the Asthma Bother Profile, the Breathing Problems Questionnaire, and the Lung Information Needs Questionnaire. He retains an interest in asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) management, both in terms of ongoing research and committee membership

More recently he has combined his earlier interests in theoretical psychology with that of health psychology. In 2001 he published the ‘intelligent body hypothesis’ – the hypothesis that the body can be treated as a complex system, a hypothesis that can be applied to several diseases including chronic fatigue syndrome and asthma. More recently, he has developed the ‘therapeutic ritual’ hypothesis, and is currently investigating non-specific mechanisms that underlie a range of psychological and physical symptoms. This investigation includes self-help psychological techniques and therapies in complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), and includes the topics of placebo research, therapist effect research, and psychotherapy research.
